Our rafter square allows you to lay out precise seat cuts from a 1:12 to a 12:12 in a single, fluid step, completely eliminating the inefficient and time-consuming three-step process of traditional squares. This revolutionary efficiency is made possible by our first-of-its-kind second pivot point on the 45-degree side, which references a new, dedicated seat cut scale. The square’s 45-degree edge is an impressive 41% longer than the 90-degree side. This extended length provides superior stability and allows you to fully mark a 7/12 pitch across a 2×6 in a single pass. The result is a design that saves you valuable time, reduces the chance of error, and ensures perfect accuracy on every rafter.
Laying out window and door openings has never been easier. Our rafter square features a unique design with three parallel sides that create a dedicated 0-to-3-inch span, allowing you to make three full layout marks across two pieces of 2x material from a single placement. The outer parallel lines are precisely 1 1/2″ apart, with a 1/32″ undercut on the inside edge to account for pencil thickness, ensuring your layout marks are always perfectly accurate. This innovative feature completely eliminates the need for multiple measurements, saving you a significant amount of time and ensuring perfect, repeatable layouts every time.
We’ve turned a traditionally unused area into a powerful tool for framing. The backside of the rafter square’s shoulder now serves as a marking shoulder for common dimensional lumber. This innovation provides two quick-access guides for fast, accurate layouts:
- A line for a 2×6 / 5 1/2″ reference.
- An inside edge of a center cutout, which doubles as a 2×4 / 3 1/2″ reference.
These integrated marks allow you to make common layout marks instantly on your plate material or for layouts on the floor. No more turning your square back and forth between the measuring and flat-to-the-material shoulder. This innovation allows you to complete the entire process in one simple step, saving you time and ensuring consistent markings every time.
The shoulder of our rafter square is designed for fast and accurate 1/8″ measurements. Through the strategic sizing of our laser-cut notches, every valley is on a 1/4″ mark and every peak is on a 1/8″ mark, providing a quick and reliable guide. To provide ample room for both your pencil and easy eye referencing, we’ve deliberately left a 1/4″ space between the highly used areas, such as:
- 5 1/2″ for 2×6 markings
- 4 1/2″ for triple stud markings
- 3″ and 1 1/2″ for window and door layouts
This innovative design, with its intentional 1/4″ spaces, makes it simple to achieve precise, small-increment layouts with easy pencil access.
Our scribe bar has been completely redesigned for superior accuracy and ease of use. It features laser-cut notches with square corners that perfectly center any mechanical or carpenter’s pencil, ensuring a consistent mark every time, whether your pencil is sharp or dull. For fast, hassle-free referencing, every 1/2″ mark is larger, with the first one beginning at 1 1/2″, making it easy for your eye to quickly find the right position. The scribing notches are in 1/8″ increments, and with a scribing range from 1/8″ to 6 1/8″, it’s one of the longest in the industry, giving you unmatched versatility for any project.
Making runoff adjustments has never been faster. Our square gives you the ability to easily take off 3/4″, 1 1/2″, or 3″ of run from your board without ever having to move the square. With the square set in the plumb cut position, you can simply mark the corresponding edge to make your adjustment instantly and accurately.
Examples for these quick adjustments include:
- 3/4″ for half the thickness of a 2x ridge material.
- 1 1/2″ for the thickness of a fascia board.
- 3″ for common double stacked girders.
Laying out a birdsmouth cut just got a lot simpler. Our rafter square features dedicated reference marks from the original pivot point, making it easy to create common 3 1/2″ and 5 1/2″ birdsmouths. By simply referencing these markings off of your plumb line, you can quickly and accurately mark the cut in a single motion, saving you time and ensuring a perfect fit every time. We also kept the familiar dotted line, which is perpendicular to the 45-degree edge, for laying out custom-sized birdsmouths.
The versatility of our square is built into every detail. The peaks of the laser-cut notches in the scribe bar section have been strategically cut off to create additional marking edges for a variety of common tasks, including:
- 1/2″: ideal for marking the thickness of roof sheeting on gables to get fascia measurements.
- 3/4″: ideal for marking half of a stud’s thickness during layout or adding a mark on a landing for stair installation.
- 1 1/2″: ideal for 2x material hanger layout.
This clever design provides you with quick-access marking capabilities without having to reposition your square or reach for another tool, saving you time and improving accuracy.
- Premium Aerospace Aluminum: Both the blade and the shoulder are crafted from strong, lightweight 6061 aerospace aluminum to withstand tough job site conditions.
- Advanced CNC Manufacturing: We use a unique combination of CNC laser and router cutting to ensure unparalleled accuracy. Laser cutting creates sharp peaks and valleys on the square’s shoulder, making it easy to align with pencil marks or the edge of lumber. The scribe bar also features laser cutout notches at every 1/8″, ensuring any pencil you use remains perfectly centered for consistent and accurate scribing.
- Precision and Durability: The rafter square’s entire shape, inside parallel cutouts, and all markings are fully CNC-routered in a single step. This guarantees a perfectly square, parallel, and accurate tool. All markings are then filled with oil-based enamel paint for extreme durability and high visual contrast.
- Solid, Reliable Shoulder: The rafter square’s shoulder is machined from solid stock 6061 aluminum, providing a strong, ergonomic base that feels substantial and reliable in your hand. It is securely fastened to the blade with stainless steel socket head screws for maximum durability and strength.
- Anodized for Longevity: Both the blade and the shoulder are treated with a protective anodized finish. The blade has a clear anodizing for a sleek, clean look, while the shoulder features a colored anodizing for enhanced durability and a unique appearance.
The blade is constructed of a sturdy 3/16″ plate. The shoulder is machined down from solid stock to the final measurements of 15/16″ wide by 1/2″ tall and 7 1/2″ long.
